Was the election in NY-26 a referendum on Paul Ryan's plan to destroy Medicare and replace it with coupons?

A Democrat has won that seat for the first time in years. That area is so red it actually voted for Carl Paladino, so why did the GoP's fortunes change so drastically after the Repub in the race decided to hitch her wagon to Ryan's (sharply) falling star?
