My ipod will not sync how can i fix?

my ipod will sync sometimes and but 99% of time it will not. I have stuck it in disk mode. It say ipod can not be synced. the required files cannot be found. It is a ipod classic 5th generation. I would like know how can i fix this i have been trying get my music on it
