Do cats hate it when you breathe down their backs?

Today I was holding my very sweet natured kitty,who has never purposely scratched me or hissed at me. I accidentally exhaled sharply on his back, and he immediately turned around, hit me in the face and hissed at me, which has never happened before. Do all cats hate it when you breathe down their backs or is he unique?
